What is a sauna hat?
A sauna hat, also known as a banya hat, is a head covering worn for comfort in the sauna. It adds an insulating layer between the heat and your head. Hats come in wool, synthetic fibres, blends, and other materials. Felt describes how a fabric is made, rather than its fibre content: a felt hat may be wool, synthetic, or a blend.
The benefits of wearing a sauna hat
Saunas can reach 90°C (194°F) or more, and the air is often hottest near the upper benches. A hat can help reduce direct heat exposure to the covered parts of your head, hair, and ears, making the heat feel more comfortable.
A sauna hat may make the heat feel more comfortable, but it does not prevent overheating or make longer sessions safer. There is no need to reach a minimum session length. Leave the sauna and cool down if you feel dizzy, nauseated, weak, or otherwise unwell.
How does a sauna hat work?
The hat acts as an insulating barrier between the hot air and your head. How it feels depends on the material, thickness, fit, and which areas it covers.
How to use a sauna hat
Put the hat on so that it sits comfortably and covers the areas you want to shield, without blocking your vision. Follow the instructions supplied with your particular hat for dry or wet use, as not every material or construction is suitable for soaking.
How to wash a sauna hat
Start with the care instructions supplied with your hat. Washing temperature, detergent, and drying method depend on its material and construction. Let the hat dry fully between uses, and clean it as directed when needed. Only machine-wash it if the manufacturer explicitly allows it.
Before washing your sauna hat:
- Check the care label or ask the supplier if instructions are missing.
- Use the washing method and water temperature specified for your hat.
- For wool hats, use a detergent suitable for wool if washing is permitted.
- Handle gently; avoid wringing or stretching the hat.
- Reshape and dry using the method recommended by the manufacturer.
- Do not machine-wash or tumble-dry unless the care instructions allow it.

Sauna hats today
Sauna hats are one of the many ways people make their sauna routine their own. Some bathers enjoy wearing one, while others prefer to go without. There is no single style you need to follow.
The chart shows relative Google search interest over time. It does not measure hat sales or the number of people who wear sauna hats.
Do I need a sauna hat?
A sauna hat is optional. If you enjoy the sauna but find the direct heat on your hair or ears uncomfortable, you may prefer wearing one. A lower bench or a shorter session may also feel better. Choose what is comfortable for you, and leave if you feel unwell.
Types of Sauna Hats
Sauna hats come in a variety of shapes, colours, and materials. Choose a comfortable fit, the coverage you want, and a material with care requirements that suit you. Simple bell-shaped hats offer an understated look, while styles inspired by Viking helmets, aviator caps, and other designs add some fun. They can also make a thoughtful gift for someone who enjoys the sauna.
Sauna Hat Alternative
A small towel wrapped loosely around your head is another way to cover your hair in the sauna. It may be less secure than a fitted hat, and the feel will depend on the towel and how you wear it. Keep your vision clear.

- Choose a comfortable fit and check the fibre content: felt can be made from wool, synthetics, or blends.
